The CEO Mindset - Liron Fendell is the Chief Executive Officer of Nutritional Growth Solutions
Liron Fendell is the Chief Executive Officer of Nutritional Growth Solutions, a global provider of pediatric nutritional products. Their products are backed by clinical research and uniquely formulated to nourish children during their different stages of growth. Founded by a visionary team of doctors and dietitians at the Schneider Children’s Medical Center, Nutritional Growth Solution leverages their wealth of practical and clinical information to develop products such as Healthy Height and ProUp.
What’s your journey in becoming a CEO? Growing up in Tel Aviv, I had a keen interest in sports and nutrition from a very young age. When I turned 18, I joined the army and served at a tech unit in the Israeli Navy for four years – and after the army, I decided to go to law school. Following this I worked as an attorney in one of Tel Aviv’s biggest law firms, representing mostly startups in the biotech industry, until I met two expert pediatricians at the Schneider Children’s Medical Center, Dr. Phillip and Prof. Shamir. I then joined them at NGS shortly after its inception to lead the business development of the company.
Tell us a bit about your business and how you are commercializing? Nutritional Growth Solutions (or NGS) is a junior milk formula business with formulas that are completely science-backed. As a mother of a picky three-year-old at the time of joining the company, I knew just how big the appetite was for high quality food choices for small children. When we had just started, the doctors and I were working from a small room in the medical center and we grew the business completely bootstrapped.
We then created a US subsidiary with offices in California, a 15-hour flight from home and we were travelling back and forth on a monthly basis.
Now, we are currently focusing on direct online sales in the US, which has placed us in great stead for when COVID-19 hit. We’re now expanding into China with offline distribution.
How are you managing with the current COVID-19 pandemic on both business and personal front? On the business front, NGS has been extremely fortunate during this period as sales have not been adversely affected by the pandemic. Grocery and supplement categories have experienced increased demand in the US, particularly for ecommerce businesses, and our supply chain is stable. At this time NGS suppliers are deemed as essential, so keeping inventory levels in line with the increasing demand hasn’t been an issue.
Personally, however, the pandemic has been weighing heavily on my mind. It’s been very saddening to see how many people are affected worldwide, but amidst the chaos and uncertainty, I welcomed the opportunity to spend more time with my family at home. I am tired of social distancing though; I really miss going out and socialising with my friends and extended family.
What’s the most exciting thing about running your business? While NGS isn’t my business, I have been with them since inception and it’s been extremely rewarding to watch it flourish and be a part of its growth.
How do you measure success? Being able to do something I deeply believe in, seeing more and more customers join us to become part of our journey, and seeing our revenue grow is an immeasurable success. Having a happy, passionate and motivated team is also very important for us.
What do you think is the most important quality of being a CEO of a listed company? I don’t believe there’s a one size fits all approach when it comes to being CEO – but for me personally, it would be humility. The ability to under promise and over deliver is also an important skill to have as a business leader.
What is your favourite book? Instead of traditional reading, listening to Audiobooks has become one of my favourite things to do during my down time. I listen to business and management books such as The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz, and for fun, I like fiction books – one of the best I’ve listened to recently is My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante.
What message do you want to send to our readership in Asia? Healthy Height, a shake mix developed by pediatricians with growth-boosting nutrients to help kids grow to their optimal height, will soon be launching in Asia – so stay tuned for our company updates and look forward to it!
