The S&P/ASX200 retreated 0.8 percent as miners and major banks put a drag on the index.

Banks pegged back on Wednesday as Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ASX:ANZ) shed 2 percent, National Australia Bank (ASX:NAB) lost 1.5 percent, , Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX:CBA) and Westpac (ASX:WBC) both slid 1.3 percent and Macquarie Group (ASX:MQG) ended 1.1 percent lower.

Iron ore producers endured a difficult trading day as Fortescue Metals Group (ASX:FMG) dived 8.3 percent, Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) plunged 5.5 percent, BHP Group (ASX:BHP) dumped 2.8 percent while Newcrest Mining (ASX:NCM) boasted 1.9 percent.

‘Buy-now, pay-later’ sector was pretty polarising as Afterpay (ASX:APT) soared 7.5 percent, OpenPay (ASX:OPY) improved 1.2 percent, Splitit (ASX:SPT) sprung 1 percent while Zip Co (ASX:Z1P) ditched 3.9 percent and Sezzle (ASX:SZL) descended 1.8 percent.

Iron ore producers had the short end of the stick as Newcrest Mining (ASX:NCM) slashed 1.6 percent, BHP Group (ASX:BHP) lost 0.8 percent, Fortescue Metals Group (ASX:FMG) dipped 0.1 percent while Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) reversed the same percentage.

‘Buy-now, pay-later’ sector ended miserably as Openpay (ASX:OPY) dived 5 percent, Sezzle (ASX:SZL) and Afterpay (ASX:APT) both crash 3.6 percent, Splitit (ASX:SPT) plunged 3.4 percent and Zip Co (ASX:Z1P) retreated 1.6 percent.

‘Buy-now, pay-later’ sector ended depressingly as Zip Co (ASX:Z1P) plunged 6.7 percent, Sezzle (ASX:SZL) slashed 5.7 percent, Afterpay (ASX:APT) dumped 3.6 percent, Splitit (ASX:SPT) lost 2.3 percent while Openpay (ASX:OPY) jumped 2.7 percent.
